About the AMWIK Scholarship Fund
The training women receive requires attention. Many more are making it to university but the majority hold diplomas despite the market shift in entry requirements for the profession. AMWIK's scholarship fund is a first initiative to address this gap but much more must be done by the industry and the government to ensure that women are not the major casualties of changes in policy in the sector that require university qualifications in an environment where women and girls are still disadvantaged at all levels of the education system.
The AMWIK scholarship fund is therefore a unique idea that stemmed from the necessity to assist member's access higher education for their own benefit and that of the entire community.
The scholarship fund is a revolving fund meaning that those that benefit from it will pay back at least certain percentages to enable other members get the opportunity too. The other difference also is that there is a committee put in place to over see a credible and authentic criterion that would choose the committed members of the Association to benefit from the fund.
The fund started in 2004 and AMWIK managed to raise 1.3 million through two major local fundraising events, a fundraising dinner in April 2004 and a walk in December 2004 which enabled four of AMWIK's members to access higher education.
The second dinner was held in July last year which raised Ksh 1.4 million and it was a huge resounding success. Five more members were admitted into local universities two at the post - graduate and three for undergraduate level.
