ThrThe Association of Media Women in Kenya prides itself in the rich diversity of its staff who include men and women from different cultural/ethnic backgrounds and non-Kenyans who come through a media women regional exchange programme. AMWIK is also assisted by a team of district coordinators in our project areas who are employed on contract basis. AMWIK members also actively contribute to programmes implementation through writing articles for various publications and newspaper stories as well as producing radio and TV programmes on issues affecting women and children.
The following are the current permanent staff:
Ms. Jane Thuo, Executive Director
Jane Thuo is a veteran communications expert and trainer, with an additional background in economics. She joined AMWIK in 2002 as a Programmes Officer and has risen through the ranks to head the organization, successfully steering an annual budget portfolio of Ksh 40 millionm, nine permanent staff and over 300 members.
She holds a Master of Arts in Communications from Daystar University and is currently a Ph.D. student at the School of Journalism, University of Nairobi. Ms. Thuo is a fellow of the 2010 Annenberg-Oxford Summer Institute where she graduated with a certificate in Global Media Policy and New Themes in Media Regulation. She also holds a Bachelor of Education (Hons) from Moi University and has over 15 years working experience in communication and programme work. She is also a part time lecturer of Communication and Developmental Studies at the University of Nairobi’s School of Journalism and at Daystar University. Previously she has worked as a fundraising and Communications Officer with African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF-Kenya), and also worked with Noel Creative Media. She has further consulted for government/World Bank funded projects and has also been the Writer and Editor of the Flying Doctor Society of Africa quarterly newsletter. Jane also worked for the Public Service, where she had a short stint teaching under the Teacher Service Commission (TSC).
Marceline Nyambala, Programmes Manager – AMWIK Marceline Nyambala is a communications specialist, journalist and editor She joined AMWIK in 2006 as a programme officer and currently oversees all the programmes work. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Minor in Business Administration from Daystar University and is currently finalizing her Master of Arts in Communication at the University of Nairobi’s School of Journalism. Marceline previously worked as business reporter for the East African Standard in Kenya and the Insurance Link and as editor of the Working Woman. She also does consultancy work and her work includes being a lead researcher - Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Gender Fact Sheet in Kenya (AMWIK), lead media consultant - Action Aid International Make the money work campaign for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, and Evaluation and Needs Assessment of The African Women’s Development and Communication Network’ (FEMNET’s) Communication products and services amongst other work. She has spearheaded several media campaigns in Kenya for different organisations.
Lilian Juma, Programmes Officer Lilian has a diverse background of journalism, communication, sociology and political science, with a wealth of experience as writer and editor. She joined AMWIK in October 2008 as a Programmes officer and further providing support in the form of editing, publications layout and production. She holds A Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Nairobi and is currently finalizing her Master of Arts in International Relations at the University of Nairobi. Lilian also has a Diploma in Journalism from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication and a Diploma in Online Research, Publishing and Communication from the University of Stockholm. She has over nine years experience in journalism. She previously worked as a Sub Editor with The People Daily, an Assistant News Editor at The Kenya Times and as a sub Editor at the The Financial Post.
Charles Mugo, Finance & Administration Officer Charles is an accomplished finance, administration and logistics professional with over five years of experience from reputable local and international humanitarian organizations including Concern Worldwide, as accountant at Beacon of Hope and Goal Ireland (Kenya) and formerly at the Kenya Methodist University-Nairobi campus. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA K) from Vision Institute of Professional Studies.
Bernard Ogoi, Radio Producer Holds a Diploma in Radio Production from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication and is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Arts in Communication at Moi University. He previously worked as a radio producer at Fish FM based in Eldoret.
Joyce Nyaruai, Programmes Assistant Joyce holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Communication from Tangaza College. Previously she worked for Youth Arts Development and Entrepreneurship Network (YADEN East –Africa) as a Programmes and Communication Assistant. She also holds a Diploma in Tour guiding and Administration from the Regional Centre for Tourism and Languages and a Certificate in Photography and Audio Visual Communication from the Kenya Polytechnic.
