Campaign Against Gender Based Violence :: Media Relation :: AMWIK’s Supporters & Networks :: Child Labor Campaign :: Regional Women's Exchange Programme :: GGP ::FGM/C :: Child Labour Awards

The Association has in the last four years carried out media and community awareness campaigns against child labour with the support of International Labour Organisation/International Programme on Elimination of Child Labour (ILO/IPEC) and WINROCK International.
The worst forms of child labour as outlined by the ILO Convention 182 remain rampant in Kenya despite their far reaching consequences to the society and the children labourers who are robbed of a future. Lack of public awareness on the forms and effects of child labour is still a major obstacle in the war against the vice.

According to ILO-IPEC, an approximated 1.3 million children are economically active and a further 2.2 million who are out of school despite the free primary education Kenya government policy could join employment at any time. Poverty and HIV/AIDS pandemic are some of the reasons that have been used to justify the rampant prevalence of child labour. This not withstanding, there has been a general ignorance by the Kenyan community of the extent and the harmful effects of child labour

The Association of Media Women in Kenya is currently running two programmes on child labour as follows:

It is also documenting the voices of children identified, rescued, rehabilitated and re-integrated by partners and capturing best practices.
