The Association’s primary focus is women, and it uses the media as a tool to advance issues that affect them. The Association recognizes that gender inequality and inequity undermines the effectiveness of development. It also recognizes that media is a powerful tool for social change and agenda setting. AMWIK's challenge however remains to ensure that media outlets positively package and widely disseminate information on issues of concern to enable communities make informed choices.


Vision
A women’s media association that advances gender equity and equality in the society so as to ensure that women and children enjoy their human rights.

Objectives
• To promote the right to and use of information to create a society that has equitable access to opportunities
• To create an informed and resourceful society;
• To ensure balanced media coverage of women issues;
• To build the capacity of women to effectively tap the potential of the media in highlighting their specific concerns;
• To foster greater understanding of issues affecting women through the media;
• To organize and unite media women in fellowship and link them with similar organizations elsewhere.


Achievements
The Association has registered the following achievements:

• AMWIK maintains cordial relations with journalists in all media houses and has continued to receive their support in the implementation of its projects. AMWIK is committed to promoting the right to and use of information to create an equitable society.
• Harnesses the competencies of its more than 300 members to give women’s and gender issues visibility in society. The members are based nationwide and are drawn from all the media houses both print and electronic in the country.
• Close working relationships with key development partners, the government, and organisations addressing women and gender issues both nationally and internationally
• Extensive experience in using community radio listening groups with recorded information addressing varius based issue such as gender based violence, civic education, gender and governance and child labour. This includes training community members on facilitation skills on how to conduct listening sessions as well as on the issues. The community groups have been extended to the margianlised Northern Eastern and upper Eastern provinces of Kenya and rural communities.
• A sustainable and growing funding base, currently at Kshs23 million per annum.
